Very few afflictions carry through a death - particularly the death-to-ghost - and almost none survive the cleaning of a ride on the Ship of the Dead. The only exceptions are buried afflictions (like the deep-rooted ditty or stigmata), the severe diseases (like plague) and the so-called "long wounds" or permanent injuries.
Longwounds are caused by especially traumatic events (like death by instant beheading) or by deliberate pinpoint fatal strikes given out by Knight specialists. It is only that very last killing blow causes a longwound in these instances but it is not uncommon to find this tactic used to ensure an opponent is weaker for subsequent encounters. The Knight specialist is able to pinpoint parts of the body to target for the long-wound so be warned: this opponent should be treated with extreme caution on the battlefield.
Longwounds, once acquired, make a permanent weakness in the part of the body injured; even after resurrection. This weakness causes afflictions to crop up whenever there is pressure against the weak area, e..g. running around quickly with longwounded legs will cause leg disability, broken foot, etc. These afflictions may be cured by normal processes but they will keep recurring until the longwound itself is cured.
It is not easy to quickly cure "longwounds" and requires either doctoring from a professional specialst (Animist or Druid) of superlative Healing skill, or under certain circumstances, Bard-supported orchestra enchantment. Carnia herb is central to the healing of "longwounds" and a carnia infusion can provide healing or resilience to certain longwounds - though not of all of those it is possible to receive. Doctoring is best carried out in special locations like Mercinae's "Houses of Healing" on Moon Street.
NOTE: longwounds will heal of their own accord for all those regularly present in Avalon after an Avalon month or the next RL day. You will be informed at login when this happens.
