Marching

Movement between Locations and Point to Point

There are two types of legion movement: MOVE (between locations) and STEP (inside the same location).


Syntax: [command/dispatch] STEP <direction>


The STEP makes the legion change position by moving between points (or localepoints) in its current location. Step is typically quick and used for positioning advantage, especially when fighting an enemy melee or dodging minefields or trying to work through territory pitted with trenches and obtacles.


You STEP in a compass direction and the legion moves between localepoints accordingly. Check LOCALE or BANNER for the locale broken down into the nine points.


STEP "examples":

STEP EAST from point WEST takes you to the CENTRE.

STEP SOUTHEAST from the CENTRE takes you to the SOUTHEAST.

STEP WEST from the SOUTHEAST takes you to the SOUTH.


Syntax: [command/dispatch] MOVE <direction>/UP/DOWN


The MOVE command tells the legion to make its way from one location to another. It must be positioned at the correct point (e..g. to move west, you need to be at the west localepoint). If you use MOVE from the wrong localepoint the legion will automatically STEP in the specified direction and attempt to move location once it reaches the edge localepoint.


NOTE: It is possible for a legion to execute a MOVE at the edge of a location even if there is not an exit in that direction providing there is a logical "arrival point" in the destination location. This is most often applied in a large area of connection locations where the legion attempts to MOVE from a localepoint that is not adjacent to an immediate exit. See below for examples:


Legion in NORTHEAST localepoint of location A with NORTH and SOUTH exits executes a MOVE NW and crosses to the SOUTH localepoint of location B.

Legion in WEST localepoint of location A with WEST exit executes a MOVE SW and arrives at the SOUTHEAST localepoint of location B.

Legion in SOUTHEAST localepoint of location A with EAST exit executes a MOVE NE and arrives at the WEST localepoint of location B.


Legion movement uses compass directions like step but can also use UP and DOWN. Moving up or down is treated as an "ascent" or "descent" and this, like trying to move across a body of water or going in and out of a trench is a special type of movement known as a "manoeuvre". Maneouvres are in part carried out using specialist training, e..g. a legion trained in Climbing will do an "ascent" maneouvre better than one without. Maneouvres are explained under HELP MANEOUVRE.


The speed at which the legion moves is dependent on various factors including its approach (see HELP APPROACH), any burdens of war such as catapults, battering rams or the like, the height / depth being traversed (a climb or a descent being slower than a regular movement) and any specialist equipment held by the legion to aid the march (ladders, transports, cavalry and such).


Hostile legion presence can disrupt both the STEP and the MOVE - it is not possible to STEP into a location with foreign legionnaires present, nor is it possible to MOVE from a location if the moving legion shares a localepoint (from a prior MOVE) with foreign legions.
