Most of the Avalon continent, as you may imagine, is above sea-level; and 'elevation' is not something you need worry too much about as you travel about the land while you remain young. However, if you come across battlefield regions or fancy yourself as something of a military commander; or indeed wish to explore the regions under the surface of the land, then 'elevation' grows more significant.
Type LOCALE and you will be informed of the height of your current location, above or below sea-level. Needless to say as you approach the coasts you will usually find yourself tending towards the level of the sea, while conversely as you head north - towards the largest mountain range stretching across the entire north of the Avalon continent - your elevation or height above sea-level will rise. There are ways to look beneath the surface of the land: to explore directly by finding tunnel or trench entrances; or swimming far beneath the surface of certain rivers or lakes. The most illuminating, however, are reserved for those with specialist skills: psycho-resonance arcana, it is told, can engender the 'under sight' while the Thaumaturgist, the tree-sympaticos, the Oracle and the Elementalist: all have their own means of digging below the continent's surface.
If you require further information on related matters, see HELP UNDERDEEPS, HELP LOCALE, HELP LOCALEPOINT, and for those of a military bent, HELP TERRAIN for significant of the elevations and the under-ground on the battlefield.
It may be that beneath your feet at this very moment a whole network of tunnels exist, or a cave hidden for millennia - untouched by mortal man - containing great treasures or terrifying monsters...
