I think your missing the point. I, and I think Telemachus, were talking about something more like this.

Fighter A is challanged by fighter B, whome fighter A could not possibly defeat. Fighter B finds Fighter A, and Fighter A has two options. Run away, or fight. Fighter A chooses fight, purely because it's the only option that isn't run away.
