10. Guilds
Guilds are central to the civilised Avalonian continent. Not only do they provide each character with expertise and knowledge but also a Guild House which offers shelter and haven to its members. Upon joining a guild, you inherit it's friends, it's enemies and even a new member can add to the guild in a unique way.
Each player is advised to take great care in choosing a guild whose outlook and skills suit their characters intentions.

Once admitted to a guild, an apprenticeship must be served before your character must choose whether or not to enter that guild profession for life or to leave the guild and look for another profession. The length of this apprenticeship is at the discretion of your Guildmaster. All guilds have a Guildmaster or Guildmistress who run their guild as they see fit and keep an eye on the guild possessions and treasury. This position carries with it great responsibility as the guild leader can exercise control over the members, pick and choose new members and expel or otherwise punish those members who do not toe the guild line.
A large guild united in loyalty to their leader can be a powerful force indeed, thus a Guildmaster is usually well respected by Avalonian society and, indeed, is one of the main pillars of it. Help on individual guilds, written by the current Guildmaster, can be seen by typing HELP followed by the guild name. Underneath are many of the guilds available to young mortal players.

The rank of Guildmaster is not only a great achievement, but is also a
role which brings great responsibility. Most guilds will have only one
Guildmaster - and therefore the fortunes of that guild will be linked to
the actions and reputation of the Master. A gregarious, confident,
powerful Guildmaster will attract novices to a guild and enhance the
prowess of the existing members. A frivolous, nervous or, most often,
uncommunicative Guildmaster can destroy a guild.
In Avalon's history, the
most popular guilds have always been those led by good, communicative, and
well-skilled individuals. If you are considering challenging for the rank
of Guildmaster, ensure that you have established a good reputation, and
that you have the qualities of leadership which mastery requires. You
would be doing your guild a dis-service if you oust a good guildmaster, or
vote against a good guildmaster, in favour of one less competent.
