The Mages

The Guild of Mages is the original magic-using guild in the land. It has always been closely alignmed to the city of Mercinae, a bastion of good, loving folk.

Founded on the 1st of Cloudburst 805 by Maedhros, the Mages are located in Central Mercinae. They have the profession of Mage and the guild alignment is Good. The guild patron is Apollo, the god of light.

Introduction:

  The Mage is the purest of magic users. He learns the traditional realms of magic and magical rituals, in addition to a healthy mix of musical, spiritual and herbalist abilities. Mages vary greatly in character from the dominant to the passive. All thirst for knowledge and to expand their abilities, and the greatest among them are unequalled by any of the other magical guilds in the field of battle. Becoming a skilled Mage, though, takes time and effort - more so than many of the other guilds. Rewards for this diligence are great and numerous.

The Mages Guild is second only to the Knights in age, and was originally founded by Cornelius the ancient god of magic. They are based in the old city of Mercinae near to Park Elienna. The Mages Guild have, over the past few centuries, developed a reputation for their stance against the goblin and enemy hordes. In the defence of Mercinae during the divine war, it was the Mages who fortified the walls of the city for many months against the evil armies. In recent years, the role of the Mages guild has been no less crucial to the survival of Mercinae as one of the dominant cultures. Mages must have strong determination to succeed, patience to learn, and a keen mind to use their complex and powerful skills.

Words of Maedhros, first guildmaster:

  The Mages Guild was established as a less aggressive, more cerbral alternative to the Knights over a century and a half ago. The guild embraces those who seek peace, not war, though retain the heart to battle for it if necessary. It is a guild of mutual support and close membership.

India, current guildmaster says the following about the guild:

  The Mages Guild is one of the oldest guilds in Avalon. The guild was founded after the Knights, and was made to be its twin and opposite. It has always been in the great city of Mercinae, city of Justice and Light - and it carries a deep loyalty to this city.

The Mages specialize in the use of pure magic, herbs and music all combined together to mold a powerful fighter and defender for not only Mercinae, but for the good of Avalon as a whole. Their skills are based upon the control of rituals, lightweaving and the manifestation of raw power through their chants.

The Mages are perhaps the strongest profession when it comes to co-operation and teamwork. Their strong friendships and bonds allow them to form the dreaded Avalon Ritual which can strike any foe throughout the land, and this makes them gruesome enemies. Making an enemy out of a Mage is not to be done lightly, for they are not alone!

As a Mage you will come face to face with powerful and evil opponents who mock justice and wish to destroy all that is good. As such, the Mage stands on the front line being one of the determining forces between Good and Evil.

Mages need not rely on poisons, swords and armour. Instead, through the power of their minds and magics they create their instruments of war such as their fearsome loyal dragonsteeds, fireball blasting magestaff, or neigh impenetrable lightarmour.

Even though Mages have devastating offensive potential with their life crushing rituals and candescences, they have even greater defensive and supportive capabilities, and are often relied upon to provide safety and healing herbs to fellow citizens and friends.

The path of the Mage is not to be lightly undertaken. There is a need to acquire a great deal of knowledge in an environment that can sometimes be very dangerous. The power of the Mage may be strong, but the heart of a Mage must be stronger. You will need the help of older members to function as mentors and guides. To be a good Mage, one needs intelligence, strong will, an eternal thirst for knowledge, patience, and a willingness to learn from your mistakes.

To be a great Mage one needs to temper these traits with a strong desire for justice and a willingness to fight for Light no matter the cost. For a Mage is made great not by what they were born to be in Avalon but what they have it in them to be.

Charming This enables you to learn, chant and cast magical spells of a specific type.
Rituals This gives you the ability to create powerful magics in a given area.
Candescence The skill of light-weaving, for both defensive and powerful attacks.
Music Your ability to play musical instruments and bring about enchantments through them.
Herbs These have various beneficial effects while poisons are harmful. The Mage is able to find and pick these.

Location:

  Head to the far south of Cassiandora Square and then head east in the direction of Park Elienna. About halfway between the square and the park there is a shimmering statue. To the north of the candescent statue is the guildhouse.
