There is a specific problem in playing by modem, which does not apply to Internet. If you are attacked while you have a long pending input line, and the attack generates a lot of text, it can become quite impossible to terminate the pending input, so as to respond to the attack. This is because, for modem players, on receipt of a new line of output, the system generates a string of spaces to erase the pending input, sends the output, and then repaints the pending input. It is possible to watch yourself being killed while hammering the return key to try to kill the pending line, without success. If there are not to be faster modems, I think this problem should be dealt with.
