Foreword: A Connoisseur’s World
Of Tolkein, it was written after his death, “...how, given little over half a century of work, did one man become the creative equivalent of a people?”
Of Avalon, it has been written that, uniquely in this hack‘n’sash genre, we have a world-venue capable of providing the creative background to accumulate something akin to Tolkein’s remarkable achievement. It is not, however, a case of writing from the safety of an ivory tower (or dark suburban study) but instead an immersion of passions, an unfettered collision - or a thrilling caress - of people such as you. Individuals given carte blanche to play out the heroic side of their personalities. Individuals responsible, as of 2008, for weaving a living narrative nigh on two decades in the making. Other games are step-by-step affairs, delimited by rules and regulations; just as real-life is increasingly governed by a thousand petty laws that confine and try to condition our every act and thought. Avalon is different. Avalon is an escape. For good or for ill, this game alone carries the 'torch in the darkness': courage and cowardice, vengeful crimes and breathtaking altruisms, all colours of personality meeting (some in friendship, some on the battlefield) as participants in the struggle to make their mark on the land’s peerless, vainglorious history.
Freedom. Adversaries and allies to rekindle the embers of even the most malaise-ridden imagination. This is Avalon’s offer to you, with all the irreconcilible, contradictory, beautiful ambiguities this most rare and precious of gifts can bestow.
“The best online role playing game on the web.” (Cyberflash TV on CANAL+)
It is not the most technologically advanced nor the most populous ‘product’ just as “the blockbuster movie is watched by millions more than ever read the novel from which it derived.”; but those with a more profound life of the mind know with every fibre of their being that where pictures are opiate eye-candy, the written word achieves true penetration. It works its way, like a waking dream, into one’s blood and once in, wheresoever one finds life’s future chapters unfold, literature remains - ever calling, ever echoing back, like youth; like the footsteps of those first heroes whose names were etched in Avalon’s oh-so-real folklore so very long ago...
“Avalon is probably the largest and most complex role playing MUD ever” (Acorn User Magazine)
Although generally we do not seek to recommend external sites, preferring to allow individuals within Avalon to publicise their works to those whose company they seek to court and inform, there are some we have been specifically prevailed upon to add to our little list as ‘welcoming all-comers’. Click above for the full list.
Avalon is an ever-evolving world and there is nothing written in stone about the days, years, nay decades to come. Thus its peoples are free to contribute their own works to become a part of the land - monuments eternal to the creators - from the simplest of garments to the most awe-inspiring of palaces; all submissions are welcome, providing their quality is consistent with Avalon’s purple prose and its struggle for originality of content. Click above to find out more about the nitty-gritty of sending your own ideas for consideration.
Many make their own websites about aspects of Avalon, generally focussing on their guild, their city, their divine order or some other unifying aspect of their character’s development. They may wish to have links from their websites back onto our own central site - to aid the quest for fresh faces, to spread the word of the gameworld about which they feel so passionately. Or perhaps you have a website unrelated to Avalon but wish to put links to the land nonetheless - to bring in a different demographic or simply to curry favour with a guildmaster, a baron or a divine patron... whatever the motives, click above for details about linking to Avalon's website.
Most begin their Avalon careers using our java applet - an integrated web client (or computer program) whose purpose is to aid your early steps in the land, to form a bridge to smooth your progress from blank-page new-born to enthusiastic neophyte. The java applet is generally superseded, later in an Avalonian’s life, by a more complex dedicated client and depending on the type of computer you use and the type of operating system you prefer, we have a number of fine clients recommended to us. These are all used and tested regularly by one or other strata of Avalon society. Click above to be carried onto a client listings page. Do feel free to contact us if you know of a client we should include and have not yet done so, or inform us of any inaccuracies on this as well as any page you find about this site.
